Many buildings here were family houses subdivided into let rooms, and the bathrooms were created during that conversion rather than built with the house. They are small, oddly shaped and used constantly by people who did not choose them, which is a demanding combination.
Bathrooms made out of leftover space
A bathroom carved out during a conversion is usually whatever shape was available: a cut corner, a stepped wall where a duct runs, a doorway in an awkward place.\n\nA standard enclosure assumes two straight walls meeting squarely, which frequently does not exist here.\n\nSo the glass is made to the room rather than the room to the glass, cut around a step with the edge polished so the panel sits flat. It costs a little more than a stock size and it is the only thing that actually fits.
Doing several rooms in one go
Where a building has six or eight let rooms, the bathrooms are usually similar and they are all used equally hard.\n\nDoing them together is substantially cheaper: one survey, one delivery, glass cut in a batch and one setting up.\n\nWe would still measure each room individually, because conversions are never as consistent as they look. But everything after the measuring is shared, and on a building of this size that is a real difference in the total.
Simple is what survives here
In a bathroom used by a succession of tenants, anything with an adjustment or an alignment will be operated carelessly and will fail.\n\nSo the right fitting is the one with the fewest moving parts: a fixed screen with no door at all, where the room allows it.\n\nIt contains the spray, cannot be forced, has no hinge to drop and no catch to break. It is also the cheapest option, which is unusual — normally the durable choice costs more.
