Because of aircraft noise on this side, a lot of households here keep windows shut far more than they otherwise would. That has a consequence for bathrooms that nobody connects: a room that is never aired does not dry, and enclosing the shower in it makes that worse rather than better.
A bathroom that is never aired
A bathroom normally dries because somebody opens a window, and where the window stays shut that does not happen.\n\nPut a tall sealed enclosure into that room and the steam has nowhere to go at all, so the grout stays damp and mould follows.\n\nSo here we leave a generous gap at the top of the enclosure rather than the minimum, and we ask whether the extractor genuinely pulls. Holding a sheet of tissue to the grille tells you in a second, and a great many of them do nothing.
The lid that makes an unaired room worse
People often ask for the enclosure taken to the ceiling, reasoning that it keeps the warmth and the water in.\n\nIn a room that is not ventilated, that produces a sealed box with no air change and everything inside stays wet between showers.\n\nSo we will not do it in these houses, and we explain why rather than simply declining. Where warmth is the concern a heater is the answer; a lid on the enclosure is not, and it creates a problem that shows up months later.
Glass that does not add to the damp problem
In a room with limited air change, the amount of surface holding water after a shower matters.\n\nA framed enclosure has more edges, channels and joints where water sits than a frameless one, and each is somewhere damp lingers.\n\nSo where the bathroom ventilates poorly we would lean towards frameless or semi-frameless if the walls allow it, and towards a design with the fewest horizontal surfaces. It is a small factor on its own and it adds to everything else here.
