Rust on a shower door comes from its metal fittings, not the glass. Hinges, handles and the rollers on sliding doors rust when thin chrome wears through. We replace the rusting part with a stainless one, on the glass you already have. The brown streaks below a fitting are rust carried down by water.

- Hinges are the metal fittings the door swings on. Rust shows first around the screw heads, then brown streaks run down the wall. The door may also swing stiffly or click.

- How to tell
- The handle feels rough or pitted where your hand grips it. It may leave brown marks on your palm or your towel. Its stem may be rusting where it meets the glass.

- How to tell
- Rollers are the small wheels a sliding door hangs from at the top. Brown dust under the rail and a grinding slide point to rusting wheels.

- Look closely at each fitting to find where the rust starts: hinges, handle or top rail.
- Wipe a brown streak with a damp cloth and follow it up to the fitting above.
- Open and close the door gently, and notice any stiffness, clicking or grinding.
- Hold the handle lightly and see whether it rocks, which means rust has reached the fixing.

Will the rust stains on my bathroom tiles go once the fittings are changed?
New stainless fittings stop fresh stains from forming. Old marks on tiles or grout may stay, depending on how deep they have soaked in. Cleaning or replacing tiles and grout is not work we do. A tiling contractor handles that.
Can a rust remover save my shower door fittings?
It can lift surface stains for a short while. It will not stop rust that has started under the chrome. Strong acid products also harden the seal strips, the soft plastic edges of the door. Once the metal is pitted, a new fitting is the lasting answer.
If every fitting on my shower door is rusting, which should be changed first?
Start with the part that carries the door's weight. That is the hinges on a swinging door, or the rollers on a sliding one. A rusted handle is unpleasant, but it does not hold the door up. We can price all of them on one visit, and you choose the order.
Does rust on the fittings weaken the shower glass?
The glass itself does not rust or weaken. The risk is where rusted metal touches it. When the rubber pads in a hinge or under a handle perish, metal can press on the glass. That is why every new hinge or handle goes on with fresh pads.
