Steam is what kills a bathroom hinge
An office hinge lives in dry air and can last decades. A shower hinge lives in a hot, wet box. Steam gets into the pivot, hard water dries on the spring, and the chrome pits where soap sits on it.
The first sign is a door that no longer swings freely, or clicks at one point in its travel. Then rust freckles appear around the screw heads. Then the door drops on the hinge side, and its bottom corner starts touching the fixed panel or the tray.
Cheap hinges fail this way in three or four years. Good bathroom-grade hinges, fitted with proper gaskets and rinsed occasionally, run ten and more. When we replace, we replace with the second kind.
Matching hinges to a bathroom that is already tiled
Your shower glass was drilled before it was toughened, so the new hinges must match those holes. That part is standard practice, and most Indian shower hinges follow common hole patterns.
The bathroom adds its own rules. A hinge fixed to tiles must be removed and refitted without cracking a tile, and the fixings behind it are often rusted into place. We cut old screws rather than force them, because a cracked wall tile in a finished bathroom has no good repair.
We also check what the wall fixing goes into. Screws that have been wet for years sometimes hold in nothing but rust. Fresh anchors, set with sealant, are part of doing this once instead of yearly.
The replacement, step by step
The door comes off and rests on a pad. In a bathroom that means working in a tight, tiled space, and we bring covers for the tray and the fittings below.
Old hinges off, old sealant and scale cleaned from the glass and the wall. New hinges go on with fresh rubber gaskets on every glass face. Gaskets are the insurance between metal and glass, and reusing flattened ones is how hinged glass cracks later.
The door is hung, levelled, and set so its seal strip touches the fixed panel evenly top to bottom. Water finds any unevenness, so we check with the door shut against light. Screw heads and the wall line are finished with bathroom silicone, and we ask you to give it a day before the first shower.
Prices, and choosing the right pair
A pair of wall-to-glass bathroom hinges, supplied and fitted, starts at ₹2,600. Doors hung off a fixed glass panel take glass-to-glass hinges at ₹3,600 a pair, because the hinge itself costs more.
Brushed and black finishes cost a little more than chrome and are worth it in bathrooms where the other fittings match. What matters more than finish is grade: bathroom hinges should be stainless inside, not just chrome outside. The ones we fit are.
