Steam is what wears out a bathroom hinge
An office door hinge works in dry air. A shower hinge works in a hot, wet box. Steam gets into the pivot, hard water dries on the spring, and the chrome pits where soap sits on it.
The first sign is a door that no longer swings freely, or clicks at one point in its swing. Then rust spots appear around the screw heads. Then the door drops on the hinge side, and its bottom corner starts touching the fixed panel or the floor.
Hinges that are only chrome on the outside fail this way sooner. When we replace, we fit bathroom-grade hinges that are stainless inside.
Matching hinges to a bathroom that is already tiled
Your shower glass was drilled before it was toughened, so the new hinges must match those holes. Most shower hinges follow common hole patterns, so this is usually straightforward.
The tiles need care. A hinge fixed to tiles must come off without cracking a tile, and its screws are often rusted in place. We cut old screws rather than force them, because a cracked wall tile in a finished bathroom is hard to repair.
We also check what the wall fixing goes into. Screws that have been wet for years sometimes hold in nothing but rust. We set fresh anchors with sealant, so the door stays up.
The replacement, step by step
We take the door off and rest it on a pad. We cover the shower floor and the fittings below.
The old hinges come off, and we clean old sealant and scale from the glass and the wall. The new hinges go on with fresh rubber gaskets on every glass face. The gaskets keep metal off the glass, and reusing flattened ones is how hinged glass cracks later.
We hang the door, level it, and set it so its seal strip touches the fixed panel evenly. Water finds any unevenness, so we check with the door shut against the light. We finish the screw heads and the wall line with bathroom silicone. Silicone needs about 24 hours before the shower is used.
Prices, and choosing the right pair
A pair of wall-to-glass bathroom hinges, supplied and fitted, starts at ₹2,210. A door hung from a fixed glass panel needs glass-to-glass hinges. Those are ₹3,600 a pair, because the hinge itself costs more.
Brushed and black finishes cost a little more than chrome. They are worth it where the other bathroom fittings match. The grade matters more than the finish. Bathroom hinges should be stainless inside, not only chrome outside, and the ones we fit are.
The work carries our 6-month warranty on repairs. If the door drops again in that time, we come back and set it.
