The short answer
A gap in a closed sliding door usually comes from worn seal strips along its edges. A door that has sunk on its rollers leaves a wedge-shaped gap instead. A door that stops short, or a loose lock, are the other causes. Most gaps are closed in one visit.

- How to tell
- The door closes fully, but light shows along one edge at night. Look closely at the interlock, where the two sliding shutters meet. If its strip is flat or missing, dust collects on the floor just below it.
- What we do
- We fit new brush or rubber strips sized to each gap. They close the gap without making the door drag. We check the result with a light on one side of the closed door.

- How to tell
- The gap is wedge-shaped, wide at the top and closed at the bottom, on one side. The door has also become heavier to push. The low corner may scrape the frame as it closes.
- What we do
- We fit a new pair of rollers, and the door sits level again. It then meets the frame along its full height.

- How to tell
- The door will not slide the last small distance, so it leaves an even gap. Grit, a moved stopper or a bent guide is usually in the way. You may feel it bump to a stop early.
- What we do
- We clean the track and move the stopper back to where it belongs. We reset or replace a bent guide, so the door closes fully.

- How to tell
- The door locks, but you can still move it a little against the frame. A thin gap stays open along the lock side. You may feel a draught there, and hear a rattle in wind.
- What we do
- We move the keeper, the part on the frame that the lock hook catches. Then the lock draws the door tight against its seal. A hook that has worn round is replaced with a new lock of the same size.

What you can check first
These checks are safe to do yourself. A photo or a short video of what you find helps us come prepared.
- At night, switch on a light on one side and look for lines of light from the other.
- Check whether the gap is even from top to bottom, or wider at one end.
- Lock the door, then press it gently to see if it still moves in the frame.
- Look at the strips along the door edges and where the two shutters meet.
- Vacuum the track, then close the door again to see if it now closes fully.

Can mosquitoes get in through a gap in a sliding door?
Yes, and so can ants and dust. A thin gap along an edge is enough for them. New seal strips close it while the door is shut.
Will new seals make my sliding door stiff to open?
Not if the strips are the right size. A strip that is too thick presses on the frame and drags. We size each strip to its gap. Then we slide the door end to end before we leave.
Does a gap in the sliding door make the AC room lose its cold?
It can. Cool air leaks out through any gap left around a closed door. Warm, dusty air comes in through the same gap. Closing the edges helps the room stay cool for longer.
