A uPVC door can settle slightly on its hinges or rollers, leaving the locking points out of line with the frame. That makes the handle stiff and can stop the key from turning. We check the complete door first, then adjust its alignment, keeps, seals and hardware in the right order.

- You need to lift or pull the door before the handle will rise. The handle and key may work normally when the door is open. You may also see fresh marks on the metal keeps in the frame.

- We set the hinges or rollers so the door sits square again. We then adjust the keeps, the metal parts that receive the locking points, so the door locks without force.

- How to tell
- The handle feels loose, stops partway or will not lift even when the door is open. The key may turn without moving every locking point along the edge of the door.

- How to tell
- The rubber seal has folded, come out of its groove or bunched at a corner. The door springs back when you push it shut, and the handle locks only with extra pressure.

- How to tell
- The bottom edge drags on the threshold, or one corner catches the frame. The door looks shut, but a final push is still needed before the lock works.

- With the door open, move the handle gently and see whether every locking point moves.
- Close the door slowly and look for the first corner or edge that touches the frame.
- Compare the gap around the door to see whether it is wider at one end.
- Look for a rubber seal that has folded, stretched or come out of its groove.
- Take a short video showing the door closing, the handle lifting and the key turning.
Do not force the handle or key. A snapped part can leave the door locked shut, and an entrance door that cannot lock needs prompt attention.

Why does my uPVC door handle lift but the key still will not turn?
One or more locking points may still be pressing against the frame instead of entering their keeps. The key then has to hold that pressure and feels stuck. Setting the door and keeps correctly often restores an easy turn.
Should I pull harder on a stiff uPVC door handle?
No. Extra force can snap the handle or damage the lock inside the door. Try it gently with the door open. If it is still stiff, stop using force and have the hardware checked.
Does a uPVC door that will not lock need to be replaced?
Usually not. Alignment, keeps, handles and multipoint locks can all be repaired or replaced separately. A complete door is considered only when the frame or door itself is badly damaged.
