The short answer

A wooden door that will not close has usually dropped on loose hinges, so the latch misses the frame. Damp in the monsoon swells the wood and makes it worse. Resetting the hinges and moving the latch plate often gets the door closing again. Wood swollen past that needs a carpenter to plane it, and we do not do carpentry.

Why it happens

Usually one of these 5 things, commonest first. Each one says how to tell, and what we do about it.

  1. The door has dropped on loose hinges

    How to tell
The top corner on the handle side catches the frame as the door shuts. The hinge screws may turn without gripping. You may see a gap open between a hinge and the frame.
    What we do
We tighten or reset the hinges, with larger fixings where the old screw holes have worn. That lifts the door back into its frame. Split or rotten wood around a hinge needs a carpenter first.

  2. The latch no longer meets its strike plate

    How to tell
The latch is the sloped bolt that clicks into the frame when the door shuts. The strike plate is the metal plate on the frame that it clicks into. The door swings shut, touches the frame and bounces open again.
    What we do
We move the strike plate to where the latch now lands. If the lock or latch has worn out, we price a new one before fitting it. The door then clicks shut with a normal push.

  3. The wood has swollen in the monsoon

    How to tell
The door is tight all round the frame, not only at one corner. It gets harder to close after rain and eases again in dry weather.
    What we do
We reset the hinges and the strike plate first, because that often gives the door enough room. If the wood still binds after that, it has to be planed. Planing is carpentry, which we do not do, so you need a carpenter.

  4. The door binds at one spot and needs a shove

    How to tell
You have to push the door hard, or lift the handle, to get it shut. The frame shows a worn or shiny patch where the door catches.
    What we do
We read where the door rubs before we adjust anything. A hinge or fitting that has moved is set back in place. If the rub comes from swollen wood, we stop and tell you it needs a carpenter.

  5. A draught strip on the frame is too thick

    How to tell
Someone has stuck a foam or rubber strip on the frame to stop a draught. The door now springs back as you close it, and the latch will not catch.
    What we do
We take the thick strip off the frame. The new seal we fit is slim, so the door closes onto it and the latch still clicks.

What you can check first

These checks are safe to do yourself. A photo or a short video of what you find helps us come prepared.

  • Open the door and look at the hinges for a screw that has come loose or sticks out.
  • Close the door slowly and watch where the latch meets the frame.
  • Notice whether the door gets harder to close after rain and easier in dry weather.
  • Look along the edge of the frame for a shiny or worn patch where the door rubs.
  • Check whether a foam or rubber strip has been stuck along the frame.

Common questions

Will my wooden door close properly again once the monsoon is over?

It may ease as the wood dries out. A hinge that has dropped stays dropped, though, whatever the weather. If the door still catches in dry weather, the hardware needs setting right.

Who should I call for a wooden door that needs planing?

A carpenter. Planing takes a thin layer off the edge of the door, and that is carpentry. We do not do it. If you are not sure which you need, send us a photo and a video first.

My wooden door will not lock at all now. Is it the lock or the door?

Try the key gently with the door standing open. If the bolt moves easily, the lock is probably fine and the door has moved away from it. If the key is stiff even with the door open, the lock itself has worn. We can fix either one.

Does resetting the hinges damage the wooden door frame?

No, when the wood is sound. We use the old screw positions where they still hold, or larger fixings where the holes have worn. If the wood around a hinge has split or rotted, we tell you before we touch it.
