Why sliding doors stop locking
The hook wears round. A sharp hook grips its keeper. A worn one slips out when the door is pushed, which is exactly when you need it to hold.
The door has dropped. Rollers wear, the door sinks, and the hook or bolt no longer reaches its keeper. The lock is often fine, and the door needs lifting back to height.
The flush handle has snapped. On many framed doors the handle and the lock are one unit. A broken handle then leaves no way to work the lock.
A door that needs lifting or slamming before it locks is showing one of these faults. Send a short video of the door closing when you book. It often shows us the fault before we arrive.
Framed sliders and frameless sliding doors
On a framed aluminium or uPVC slider, the lock sits inside the edge of the frame. We fit a new hook lock into the same cutout. These locks follow a few standard sizes. On older doors, where the exact original is no longer made, a current lock usually fits the same cutout.
On a frameless sliding glass door, the lock is fixed to the glass itself. The holes in the glass were made before toughening, and they cannot change. So the new lock must match them. A photo of the lock with a tape measure across it tells us which one fits.
We check the door height before the lock
If the lock itself has worn, we replace it. If the door has dropped, the right fix is the rollers, not the lock. A new lock on a dropped door fails again within months, because the hook is still stretching to reach its keeper.
Then we set the keeper, so the lock pulls the door snug against its seal before it holds. A well-set lock also closes the draught gap many sliding doors have.
We lock and unlock the door many times, fast and slow, before we leave. The whole job is usually under an hour.
What it costs, and what changes the number
A lock, supplied and fitted, starts at ₹1,190. That includes setting the keeper so the door pulls shut.
A lock with a key costs a little more than a latch-only type. If the flush pull handle is broken, it is a small extra line. If the rollers are the real fault, they have their own fixed price, and we tell you before doing anything.
Several doors in one home can share one visit. Doing the rollers and the lock together also takes one visit instead of two.
