The short answer
An open balcony lets mosquitoes fly straight in, and they gather most in the evening. Fine mesh across the open side keeps them out of the balcony itself. To keep only the room clear, mesh the balcony doorway instead. We do not fog or spray, but we close the opening with mesh.

- You can see the sky between the top of the railing and the ceiling. Mosquitoes fill the balcony once it gets dark, even when the room doors are shut.
- What we do
- Slim aluminium sections split the open side into parts, each holding a mesh panel. You choose fibreglass mesh, a light woven net, or tougher stainless steel wire mesh. Panels come out from inside the balcony when they need washing.

- How to tell
- Someone has tied or hung a net across the balcony, but it sags and lifts. Mosquitoes come in around the loose edges.
- What we do

- How to tell
- Your building's rules may not allow changes to the balcony front, or you prefer it left open. Then mosquitoes on the balcony reach the room each time the door opens.
- What we do
- On a wide doorway, pleated mesh works well, because its folds pack away at one side. It holds at any point, so you can leave it part open. The room is protected, though the balcony itself stays open to mosquitoes.

- How to tell
- The balcony door is a sliding glass door of normal width. Mosquitoes from the balcony drift in as soon as the glass slides open.
- What we do
- A mesh door shares the doorway with the glass and slides in a rail called a track. Each edge carries a sealing strip, a line of soft bristles that closes the gap. For a doorway this wide, it is usually sturdier than pleated mesh.

- Stand inside at dusk and see whether mosquitoes stay on the balcony or come indoors.
- Look at any hung net for sagging or lifted edges.
- Check your building's rules on changes to the balcony front.

- Measure the doorway width from inside with a tape.
Keep young children away from an open balcony on an upper floor. Mesh keeps out insects, but it is not built to stop a child from falling. Where a child uses the balcony, a proper grille comes first.

Can we still see the view through balcony mesh?
Yes, you see through it clearly, more so from the darker side. From indoors, fine mesh looks like a light shadow over the opening. It dims the daylight a little, much like a very thin curtain.
If the balcony is meshed, does the door to it need mesh too?
Usually not, as long as every gap on the balcony is closed. Mosquitoes then have no way to reach the door. Mesh on the doorway only helps where the balcony itself stays open.
Does balcony mesh have to reach right up to the ceiling?
For mosquitoes, yes. Even a small gap above the mesh lets them fly over the top. That is why we frame the opening from the railing or grille right up to the ceiling.
