Enclosures here are typically old enough to be failing but not old enough to be worthless. So the first question is nearly always whether to repair or replace, and the answer depends on which part has gone. We would rather tell you it is a fifteen-hundred-rupee part than sell you a new enclosure.
Repair or replace, decided by which part failed
There is a straightforward rule. If the glass is sound, it is a repair. If the glass is chipped at an edge or a hole, it is a replacement.\n\nToughened glass fails from edge and hole damage, not from the face, and a chip at an edge will eventually take the whole panel without warning.\n\nEverything else - hinges, seals, handles, tracks, fixings - is replaceable while keeping the glass. So we check the edges and the holes first, and that one inspection usually decides the whole job.
Re-sealing rather than re-fitting
A good proportion of the leaks we are called to here need re-sealing, not re-fitting.\n\nSilicone has a life. It loses adhesion at the edges, water gets behind it, and then it holds water against the wall instead of keeping it out.\n\nStripping the old seal back properly and re-sealing is a couple of hours and it fixes most leaks in an otherwise sound enclosure. The important part is removing all of the old silicone first. New silicone over old does not bond, and it fails again within months.
When the tiling is the reason to replace
Sometimes the enclosure is fine and the tiling behind it has failed - grout gone, a tile drummy, water getting behind.\n\nThat cannot be fixed from the front, so the enclosure has to come out whether or not it needed to.\n\nWhere that happens we take it out carefully so it can go back, rather than cutting it out. Provided the glass is undamaged, the same enclosure usually re-fits after the tiling is put right, and you pay for removal and refitting rather than a new one.
