A lot of houses around here have been added to - a floor built on top, a room extended, a bathroom put into what used to be a terrace. Where old construction meets new, the walls and floors do not always agree with each other, and a shower enclosure is unforgiving about exactly that.

Where new work meets old

A wall built against an existing one is rarely perfectly flush with it, and the junction is often hidden under tiling.\n\nAn enclosure spanning that junction can sit on two planes that are a few millimetres apart, which is enough to stop a frameless panel sealing.\n\nSo we run a straight edge across the wall rather than trusting the tiling to be flat. Where there is a step we either keep the enclosure on one side of it, or use a frame with enough tolerance to absorb it. Finding it first is the whole point.

Bathrooms built on a terrace

A bathroom made from part of a terrace usually has a floor that was laid to drain outwards, because that is what a terrace does.\n\nThat fall can run the wrong way for a shower, sending water towards the door rather than the drain.\n\nWe check with a level before deciding the layout. Sometimes the answer is simply to put the enclosure at the low end, which costs nothing. Where that is not possible, a shallow tray inside the enclosure is the reliable fix.

Fixing into a newer, thinner wall

Extension walls are often thinner than the original construction, and sometimes they are hollow block rather than solid.\n\nA standard fixing in hollow block feels tight on the day and pulls out later, because it is only gripping a thin face.\n\nSo we find out what we are drilling into before choosing the anchor, and use a proper hollow-wall fixing or a resin anchor where the wall needs one. It costs a few hundred rupees more and it is the difference between an enclosure that stays up and one that does not.

Common questions

Our Sector 48 bathroom is in an extension. Anything different about it?

Usually the junction where new work meets old. The two walls are rarely flush, and tiling hides it. We run a straight edge across rather than trusting the tiles, because a few millimetres will stop a frameless panel sealing.

Our bathroom was built on the terrace and water runs to the door. Fixable?

Yes. Terrace floors were laid to drain outwards, which is the wrong way for a shower. Often we can simply put the enclosure at the low end, which costs nothing. Where we cannot, a shallow tray inside the enclosure is reliable.

The extension walls are thinner. Will the enclosure hold?

Provided the right fixing is used. Extension walls are sometimes hollow block, and a standard fixing grips only a thin face and pulls out later. We check what we are drilling into and use a hollow-wall or resin anchor where needed.
