Bathrooms in NIT are mostly compact, often in flats above or behind shops. In a small room the enclosure layout is not a matter of taste - a door that opens the wrong way makes the whole bathroom awkward. Getting the swing and the footprint right is nearly the whole job here.
Why a sliding door usually wins in a small bathroom
A hinged shower door needs clear floor to swing into, and in a compact bathroom that floor is where you stand to use the basin.\n\nA sliding door takes none. It runs along the opening, so the space in front of the shower stays usable.\n\nThe trade-off is that a slider has a track at the bottom that needs wiping, and the opening is never the full width. Where the room genuinely has no spare floor, that trade is worth making, and we will say so rather than fitting what looks better in a photograph.
Getting glass up to a flat above a shop
Most flats here are reached by a straight, narrow staircase, sometimes with a turn at the top.\n\nA shower panel is rigid and cannot be angled round a tight turn the way a mattress can. If it will not go, it will not go, and finding that out on the day wastes everybody's morning.\n\nSo we measure the staircase at survey, including the ceiling height over the turn. Where the full panel will not pass, we design the enclosure in narrower sections. It is the same enclosure; it is just made to fit the route in.
Keeping the rest of the bathroom dry
In a small room, water that escapes the enclosure reaches everything, so the seal at the base matters more here than in a large bathroom.\n\nThe usual leak is not the door - it is the bottom corner where the fixed panel meets the wall and the floor.\n\nWe fit a proper base seal and silicone the inside corner rather than the outside, so water is stopped before it gets into the joint instead of after. Sealing the outside looks tidier and traps water in the gap, which is why we do not do it.
