A lot of the plots here were rebuilt as independent floors and sold finished, shower enclosure included. Those enclosures are now old enough to be failing, and they mostly fail the same way for the same reason. Replacing one is straightforward once you know what went wrong.

Why a builder-fitted enclosure fails first at the hinge

In a finished floor the enclosure is part of a package, and the hardware is where cost is taken out without it being visible at handover.\n\nThe glass is usually fine - it is toughened and it does not wear. The hinges are the part chosen for price, and they wear at the pivot within a few years.\n\nSo the common complaint here is a door that has dropped and catches, on glass that is perfectly good. Often we can re-hang the existing glass on proper hinges, which is considerably cheaper than a new enclosure.

Keeping the glass and changing the hardware

Where the panels are sound, undamaged and of a usable size, reusing them is usually the sensible option.\n\nThe limit is the drilled holes. Toughened glass cannot be re-drilled, so new hinges have to match the existing hole positions, and not all do.\n\nSo we measure the hole centres before recommending it. Where a match exists you get a working enclosure for the price of hardware and labour. Where it does not, we say so rather than fitting something that only nearly lines up.

The seal at the bottom of the door

The clear plastic strip along the bottom edge of a shower door is a wear part, and on a builder-fitted enclosure it is often the cheapest available.\n\nIt goes hard, then brittle, then it splits and stops directing water back inside.\n\nThat is usually why an older enclosure suddenly starts letting water out onto the floor when nothing else has changed. It is an inexpensive part and a short job, and it is worth trying before assuming the whole enclosure needs replacing.

How the job works

  1. Tell us about the jobSend a few photos, rough sizes and what you need. Use WhatsApp or the form. For a repair, a short video of the door moving helps a lot.
  2. We call you back in about 2 minutesWe confirm what you need and a time to visit. Where we can, we give you a rough price on the call.
  3. We come and measureWe measure the opening and check the walls, floor and ceiling around it. Anything made to size is made to these measurements, so they must be right.
  4. You get a written priceIt lists each item, with GST as its own line. If anything about the job changes, we tell you before we go ahead.
  5. We fit itYou approve the price and pay the advance. Our own team fits the work, checks that every door and window opens and closes properly, and clears up. Most jobs are done in 3 to 4 days.

Common questions

Our builder-fitted shower door has dropped and catches. Do we need a new enclosure?

Often not. The glass is toughened and does not wear; it is nearly always the hinges, which are where cost gets taken out of a package. We can frequently re-hang the existing glass on proper hinges for much less.

Can our existing shower glass be reused with new hardware?

If the panels are sound and the hole positions match the new hinges, yes. Toughened glass cannot be re-drilled, so the centres have to line up exactly. We measure them before recommending it rather than assuming.

Water suddenly started escaping our shower. Nothing else changed.

Usually the clear strip along the bottom of the door. It goes brittle and splits, and then it stops directing water back inside. It is a cheap part and a short job, and worth trying before replacing anything larger.
