Most bathrooms here are a standard size in a standard family home, and the useful conversation is about what is actually worth paying for. A lot of what gets sold with shower enclosures makes no practical difference in a room this size. Some of it makes a great deal.
Glass thickness, and where the difference stops mattering
Shower glass is usually 8mm or 10mm toughened. Both are safe; both are strong enough for a domestic bathroom.\n\n10mm feels more solid and is noticeably heavier, which matters mainly for a wide hinged door where the extra weight works against you.\n\nIn a standard-sized bathroom with a normal door width, 8mm is the sensible choice and the money is better spent on hinges. We will fit 10mm if you want it, and we will tell you honestly that in this room you are unlikely to notice it.
What a day's fitting actually involves
A straightforward enclosure is a two-visit job: measure on one day, fit on another once the glass is made.\n\nThe fitting day is roughly half a day of work - setting out, drilling, fixing the channels, glazing, then sealing.\n\nAfter that the silicone needs to cure before the shower is used, which is usually overnight rather than an hour. That is the part people are not told, and using it too early is a common reason a new enclosure leaks at the base.
Where the money is better spent
Across a domestic enclosure, the parts that determine whether you are still happy in five years are the hinges, the seals and the fixings.\n\nThe parts that make the least practical difference are the glass thickness beyond 8mm and the decorative handle.\n\nSo when a budget is fixed we would rather put it into hardware than into specification, and we say which is which rather than quoting a single figure. It is the same enclosure either way; it is what wears out that changes.
