Basavanagudi is an old, settled part of south Bengaluru. Doors in long-used buildings show their wear first. A wooden classroom door swells in the October and November rain and sticks in its frame. An aluminium wash room door drops on its hinges and scrapes the floor. Locks and handles come loose.
These are small repairs. We can usually do several doors in one evening, once the students have gone home. On a wooden door we change hinges, locks and handles, and we reset the door. A new wooden door is a carpenter's job, not ours.
