In this area we are rarely fitting a first enclosure. There is usually one already, ten or fifteen years old. The door drags, and the frame has rusted at the bottom. That changes the job. Taking the old one out properly matters as much as putting the new one in.
Taking the old enclosure out
Old toughened glass is still toughened glass (safety glass), so it comes out in one piece or it goes everywhere. We take the door off its fittings first, then the fixed panels, and we carry them out flat.
The old silicone is the slower part. Every bit of it has to come off the tile and the tray. New silicone will not stick to old silicone. It sticks to the surface underneath, or it does not stick at all.
We take the old glass and frame away with us. We do not leave it in your building for the watchman to deal with.
The holes the old frame left behind
The wall already has fixing holes. Drilling a fresh set next to them weakens the tile between the two.
So we set the new enclosure on the same line where we can. Then the new profile covers the old holes completely. That is the cleanest result and what we aim for first.
Where the new layout will not sit on the old line, we fill the holes with a matched grout. To be honest: a filled hole in a glazed tile cannot be seen from across the room, but you can see it from a foot away. We show you where they will land before we drill anything.
Choosing what replaces it
A worn sliding enclosure does not have to be replaced with another slider.
If the old one failed because the rollers wore out, a hinged door or a fixed walk-in panel removes that part completely. There is nothing to run along a track and nothing to collect grit.
If the room is too small for a swinging door, we stay with a slider and fit better rollers. We tell you which of the two your room can take, based on the measurement, not on liking.
