The bathrooms in these family houses were built for a tap, a bucket and a drain in the corner. There was never a dry side and a wet side. Putting an enclosure in does not change the plumbing. So the job is about working with the floor and the tiles you already have, not against them.
The floor already decides where water goes
Every one of these floors slopes towards one drain. That slope is set in the base layer and we are not going to change it.
So we place the enclosure so the shower falls on the side that drains. We set the door on the higher side. Then water runs away from the opening, not towards it.
Where the drain sits in an awkward corner, a fixed panel with a wide walk-in gap often works better than a door. There is nothing for water to sit against and nothing to swing.
Drilling tiles that are decades old
Old glazed tiles are harder and more brittle than new ones. They are usually stuck on with lime mortar, not modern glue.
We drill slowly with a tile bit and no hammer action. We place fixings in the face of a tile, away from the edges. An edge is where a tile splits.
We also tap the wall first. A tile that sounds hollow has come loose. Putting a fixing through it would only pull it off. Where we find one, we move the fixing line rather than take the chance.
Nothing here is a standard size
These rooms are rarely square, and the walls are rarely straight. A ready-made enclosure will leave a gap somewhere.
So we cut every panel to your opening after we measure. We take the width at the top, the middle and the floor. We make the glass to the smallest of the three.
That is also why we cannot quote a shower here from a photo. The measuring visit is what makes the price firm.
