A bathroom in a Cooke Town house is usually taller than a modern one. It has been re-tiled at least once. The building around it has settled over many years. Both facts matter. The height sets the glass thickness. The settling sets the choice between frameless and a slim frame. Neither can be decided from a photo.
Why we measure at several heights
In a building this old, the opening is often a few millimetres wider at one end. And the floor falls away from one wall.
We measure the opening at the floor, the middle and the top. We check the floor with a level while we are there. This is not fussiness. Toughened glass (safety glass) is cut before it is toughened. It cannot be trimmed afterwards.
Under a few millimetres, frameless is fine and looks better. More than that, the channel of a slim frame takes up the difference where frameless simply cannot.
Tall panels in an old house
Height means a thicker panel. On a long run it also means a support rod at the top, tying the glass back to the wall.
It also means a heavier, more awkward piece of glass to carry up a staircase built long before anybody thought about it. We measure that turn on the same visit as the bathroom.
Where a single panel will not make the turn, we build the enclosure as two panels with a thin joint. Forcing a tall toughened panel around an old corner is how it ends up in pieces on the landing.
