Most of these offices sit on the upper floors of a market block, reached by a stair from the parade below. The partitions are ordinary. What is unusual is how much the layout has to do with a visitor finding the right door and knowing they have arrived, because nothing about these buildings helps them.
Making the entrance read as an entrance
On an upper floor in a market block, a visitor arrives at a landing with several identical doors and no idea which is yours.\n\nA glazed entrance screen solves that immediately — it shows the office behind it, which no solid door does.\n\nSo we would glaze the entrance even where the budget is tight, and frost the lower part for privacy rather than the whole panel. It is the single most useful thing glass does in one of these offices.
Where the name goes, and how large
Applied lettering on an entrance screen is also the manifestation that stops people walking into it, so it has to be at eye height and visible.\n\nThat means the design of the lettering and the safety requirement are the same decision, which is convenient if it is planned and awkward if it is not.\n\nSo we ask about the name and logo before ordering glass. Frosting designed with the lettering looks considerably better than a vinyl applied afterwards, and it costs the same.
Sharing a landing with other businesses
The landing outside your door belongs to everybody on the floor, and anything you fit there affects the neighbours.\n\nSo a screen that swings out onto the landing, or a sign that projects across somebody's door, causes friction that outlasts the fit-out.\n\nWe set entrance doors to open inwards and keep everything within your own threshold. It sounds obvious and it is the most common cause of complaint in these buildings, precisely because it is decided without thinking.
