Common questions

A glass panel in my balcony railing shattered. What should I do right now?

Keep everyone, especially children, away from that section, and do not lean anything against the gap. Sweep only what is loose on the floor. Then call, and say it is a railing panel: we treat those as urgent and the first visit barricades the opening properly. The gap, not the broken glass, is the danger, and it should not wait days.

Should my balcony glass be toughened or laminated?

Match what the railing was built with, at minimum. Plain toughened is strong and breaks safe, but it vacates its frame when it breaks. Laminated stays in place as a cracked mat, holding the barrier line even broken, which is why newer codes and societies increasingly prefer it at height. If you want to upgrade to laminated while replacing, this is the natural moment.

Why does balcony glass cost more per square foot than a door or partition?

It is a heavier product doing a stricter job. Railing glass is typically 12mm rather than 8 or 10, often laminated on top of that, its edges are fully polished as a guard-rail requirement, and the panel must be made to an exact fixing pattern. You are buying barrier-at-height glass, and its rate reflects that specification, not a markup on the same pane.

Can you replace one panel to match the rest of my railing?

Yes, matching is the default: thickness, tint, edge and fixing pattern taken from your railing on the measuring visit, so the new panel disappears into the run. Perfectly clear glass matches easily. Tinted and older greenish glass is matched as closely as current stock allows, and we show you a sample edge against yours before making.

The glass in my railing is intact but has a small chip on the edge. Does it matter?

On railing glass, yes. Edge chips are where toughened panels start their one catastrophic break, and a chipped guard panel is quietly waiting for a hot afternoon or a firm knock. Send a photo of the chip with a coin for scale. Small surface bruises can be tolerable, deep edge chips on a barrier panel usually mean replacing it on your schedule rather than the glass's.

We replace balcony glass across Bengaluru. The glass in a balcony railing is a guard at height: it is what leans against the drop, and it is specified thicker and tougher than almost any other glass in a building. When a panel cracks, shatters, or takes an edge chip, the railing has a weak tooth, and the fix has an order: make it safe today, match the specification exactly, replace it properly. Railing-grade toughened glass, supplied and fitted, starts at ₹650 per sq ft, and the first visit secures the opening.

Why balcony glass is its own class of replacement

A balcony panel is a barrier at height, and everything about replacing one follows from that. The glass is typically 12mm toughened, half again the thickness of most shower doors, and in many newer buildings it is laminated: two sheets bonded on an interlayer, so that even broken glass stays in place as a mat instead of leaving a gap.

Matching the original specification is not a preference, it is the job. Thickness, type, edgework and the exact hole or slot pattern for the fixings all repeat what the railing was engineered with.

This is also why a balcony panel costs more per square foot than a door pane, and why anyone quoting door-glass rates for a railing panel is quoting a different, wrong product.

The first visit: making the gap safe

A missing or shattered panel leaves a section of railing that no longer guards anything, and until it is rebuilt, the priority is the opening.

On the first visit we clear the broken glass, including the heap a toughened panel becomes and the fragments that reach the floor below's awning, and we barricade the gap: rigid sheet or netting lashed across the section, firm enough to take a stumble.

We measure everything on the same visit: the panel, the fixings, the neighbouring panels' thickness, and the edge details. The replacement goes into fabrication the day you approve the price, and the barricade holds the fort for the few days the glass takes to make.

Fabrication and the fitting day

The new panel is cut, edge-polished, drilled or slotted to the fixing pattern, and then toughened, with lamination after where the spec calls for it. Five to seven working days is the honest window for railing glass.

Fitting day is deliberate work at height done from the safe side: the barricade comes down, fixings are inspected while the railing is open, gaskets are renewed rather than reused, and the panel is set, aligned to its neighbours and torqued to specification. On clamp-and-spigot railings, every clamp on the affected run gets checked while we are there, because whatever broke one panel may have loosened its neighbours' grip.

The railing is load-checked along the repaired section before we call it done.

Costs, causes and prevention

Railing-grade replacement starts at ₹650 per sq ft for 12mm toughened, with laminated builds priced by their build-up. The first-visit clearing and barricade is part of the job.

Worth knowing: balcony panels rarely crack without a reason. The usual culprits are a clamp tightened metal-to-glass after a gasket perished, an edge chip from moved furniture that grew, and thermal stress on panels half-shaded by structure. We look for the cause during replacement, and fixing a failed gasket or a loose clamp across the run is cheap insurance against buying this page twice.

If your society requires a lamination upgrade or an engineer's note for records, we work to it and provide the specification of what was fitted.
