A glass railing keeps the view and the light that a masonry wall or a steel grille takes away. We build new glass railings for balconies, terraces and staircases in 12mm toughened glass, which is safety glass, held by steel clamps, posts or a base channel. The railing is priced by the running foot, its length along the edge, from ₹2,500 in Bengaluru. Every panel is measured first and made to size, because toughened glass cannot be cut or drilled once it is made. This service is sold in Bengaluru only.
Three ways to hold the glass
Clamps are small steel grips, two or more per panel, bolted to short posts or to the side of the slab. They are the most common fixing and suit most balconies.
Posts are steel uprights fixed to the floor, with the glass held between them. They suit a long run or a staircase, where the glass changes angle.
A base channel is a metal trough along the floor edge. The glass stands in it with no posts and no clamps, so the railing reads as a clean line of glass. It needs a sound slab to bolt into. Which one we use depends on what your slab and wall allow, and we decide that at the measuring visit.
The glass and the pads
Railing glass is 12mm toughened as standard, thicker than the glass in a door or a shower. Toughened glass is safety glass. It is much stronger than plain glass, and if it ever breaks it falls in small blunt pieces.
Laminated glass, two sheets bonded together, stays in place even when broken. We fit it where you ask for it or where your society asks for it.
A rubber pad sits wherever metal grips glass. Metal touching glass directly is the commonest reason a railing panel cracks years later. Every clamp and every channel we fit has rubber in it.
Handrail or no handrail
A frameless glass railing can be finished with a steel handrail along the top, or left as bare glass with a polished edge. A handrail gives something to hold and takes a knock on the top edge. It is priced per running foot on top of the glass.
On a staircase we usually suggest a handrail. On a balcony it is your choice.
Measuring, making and fitting
Holes for clamps are drilled before the glass is toughened, so the measuring visit is exact. We measure each panel, mark the fixing positions and check that the slab or wall can carry the load.
The glass is then made to those sizes. On the fitting day the steel goes in first, and each panel is set, aligned to its neighbour and torqued to the right tightness. We load-test the run before we call it done.
A railing replaces a grille or an old railing in most cases. We take the old one away.
What it costs
The rate starts at ₹2,500 per running foot in Bengaluru, fitted, for 12mm toughened glass on standard clamps. A base channel, laminated glass, a handrail or a staircase run moves the rate up.
A typical balcony 10 feet along its open edge is 10 running feet. You get a written price after the measuring visit, before the glass is ordered.
