Fluted glass has fine ribs running down it. You see shape and light through it, but not detail. This build uses fluted glass only on the fixed panel, the one facing into the bathroom, and clear glass on the door. So the part of the shower on view is private, and the door still lets light through and shows you the space inside. It costs less than a fully fluted enclosure, because only about two thirds of the glass is fluted. Prices start at ₹1,085 per sq ft.
What fluted glass actually is
Fluted glass, sometimes called reeded glass, is glass with narrow vertical ribs moulded into one face. The ribs bend the light as it passes through.
Stand behind it and somebody in the room sees a soft, broken shape rather than a person. Stand in the room and you still get the daylight from the shower window.
It is not frosting. Frosting is a surface treatment, sprayed or etched onto clear glass, and it can wear at the edges over years of cleaning. Fluting is the shape of the glass itself, so there is nothing on it to wear off.
It is toughened afterwards, exactly like our clear glass, so it is still safety glass. If it ever breaks, it breaks into small blunt bits.
Why fluted on one panel and clear on the other
In most bathrooms only one side of the shower is really on view. It is the side you see from the door, or from the washbasin mirror.
Put the fluted panel there and you have solved the privacy question. The door, which usually faces a wall or a corner, can stay clear.
That matters for two reasons. Clear glass on the door keeps the shower feeling open rather than boxed in. And fluted glass costs us more than twice what clear glass costs, so leaving the door clear takes a real amount off the price.
It also looks deliberate. A fully fluted enclosure is one texture. This one has a contrast in it, and the contrast is what people notice.
Cleaning, and why the ribs face outward
We fit the fluted panel with the ribs on the outside, facing the room, and the smooth face on the shower side.
That is a practical decision, not a design one. The shower side is the face that gets soap, shampoo and hard water on it every day. A smooth face wipes clean in one pass. Ribs on that face would hold soap in every groove, and Bengaluru water leaves a chalky mark that would sit in the grooves and be very hard to get out.
The outside face only sees the odd splash and the humidity in the room, so ribs there are easy to live with.
Wipe the inside with a squeegee after a shower, the same as any glass. The outside needs a cloth now and then, wiped along the ribs rather than across them.
What decides the price
₹1,085 per sq ft is the starting rate. A normal 35 sq ft enclosure comes to about ₹38,000 before GST.
The extra over a plain clear enclosure is almost entirely the fluted panel. Fluted toughened glass costs us more than twice what clear glass of the same thickness costs. On this build about 20 of the 35 square feet are fluted, which is where the ₹235 per sq ft difference comes from.
The fittings, the seals, the silicone, the measuring visit and the day on site are all the same as our ₹850 enclosure.
The things that move it further are the same as always: the total area of glass, a thicker panel on a tall run, the fittings finish you pick, and how easy the bathroom is to reach.
